A Severe cyclone, DANA, surges towards coastal Odisha and is set to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Damara Port early Friday. However, the process of landfall begins on the night of October 24, the cyclonic storm will reach its peak from October 24, 2024, at midnight to the early morning of October 25, 2024.
As per the Indian Meteorological Department(IMD), The Cyclonic Storm DANA lay centred over the Northwest Bay of Bengal at 8:30 hrs IST today, which is about 210 Km southeast of Paradip(Odisha), It is moving Northwestwards at 13 km/hr speed, and the speed will intensify when it reaches between Puri and Sagar Island at midnight with a wind speed of 100-110 Kmph. The cyclone will likely bring gusts up to 120 km/hr, along with thunderstorms and heavy rains.
The depression formed over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a severe Cyclone Dana on Oct 24. The Cyclonic storm named ‘DANA’, which means generosity in Arabic, will primarily affect the coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal.
Authorities have issued a red and orange alert to multiple areas of heavy rainfall, storm surges and flooding. Some of the areas likely to be affected by extremely heavy rainfall and high-speed winds are Baleswar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Keonjhar, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Khorda and Puri districts of Odisha, In West Bengal South and North Paraganas, Medinipur, Jhargram, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata and Bankura districts will also experience heavy rainfall on 24th and 25th October.
Today, Odisha’s Chief Minister, Mr . Mohan Charan Majhi, chaired a high-level meeting and reviewed the preparedness for a severe cyclone. He assured people that the state government is closely monitoring the situation and they are prepared for any eventualities.
The state government has already evacuated 4 lakh people who were in danger zones and shifted them to cyclone centres where food, drinking water, and medical supplies will be available for the people. The government has deployed around 180 teams with 2000 personnel for Cyclone Dana disaster management. Over 10 lakh people will be evacuated by today. The National Disaster Response Force is creating awareness through loudspeakers in the districts of Mahakalpada and Kendrapada districts of Odisha. The Indian Navy is also prepared to conduct Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
Schools and educational institutions remain closed. The eastern railways have suspended over 200 trains in the wake of the cyclonic storm; flight operations are also suspended for two days. Rescue and Relief teams from the Army, Navy and Coast Guards are on high alert.
