Recently, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, shed light on the integrity of its AI models for driving technical development. These models replace humans for more meaningful supervisory work. Such a development marks a paradigm shift in how the world will witness technological progress in the coming years.
Let’s examine some of the major developments that the firm unveiled in its third-quarter earnings call.

Over 25% of the new code at Google is being generated by AI. This AI-generated code is examined, reviewed and approved by engineers. This, however, is not a threat to the software engineers, but a way to increase their productivity and efficiency as highlighted by the Google CEO. As per him, AI is helping Google to attract new enterprise customers, increasing deal size for its cloud business, driving deeper product adoption, improving the helpfulness of Google search etc. Rather than replacing engineers, AI currently augments their capabilities and allows engineers to focus on more complex tasks.

Google uses Gemini models to drive product adoption among enterprise users through Google Workspace and Google Cloud Services. Multiple configurations, such as Ultra, Pro, and Nano, have been designed to support scalability and adaptability for various tasks across enterprise environments. For instance, Gemini powers Google Workspace, providing advanced productivity features and AI-driven support in applications that help enterprise applications increase efficiency and collaboration. Gemini is also integrated into Google Cloud AI solutions where enterprise clients can leverage models for advanced data processing, automation and multi-modal reasoning(the ability of models to process and integrate information from multiple sources/inputs or modalities like text, image, audio, and video to make coherent decisions or responses).

Apart from the Gemini AI tools, Google also provides a range of AI accelerator tools especially the Tensor Processing Units(TPUs) which are custom hardware developed to accelerate machine learning tasks. The TPUs are specifically helpful for enterprises in training large models of Google’s Gemini. Examples of these TPUs are TPU v4 and TPU vP5, which are specialised hardware tools to accelerate machine learning tasks.

Now let us dive into the financial and operational benefits that Google reaped owing to its AI efforts. Google’s cloud business generated $11.4 billion in revenue in Q3-2024, a 35% increase from, the same period last year. This growth is attributed, in part to AI offerings that attracted new enterprise customers. CEO Pichai also noted that AI tools running on Gemini models have led to a 30% increase in product adoption among existing customers. Google reportedly also boasted a strong financial performance in its core business. Total YouTube ad and Subscription revenues exceeded $50 billion over the past four quarters. Google’s Search business generated $49.4 billion in revenue, a 12.3% increase from the previous year. It is reported that a certain degree of operational efficiency and hiring practices is driven by AI. Google’s CFO, Anat Ashkenazi also cited utilisation of AI technologies for streamlining mundane operations and allocating capital for more meaningful work. As per reports, Google’s headcount is down by over 1000 from the previous year. On a broader note, it seems Google’s AI initiatives played a significant role in its strong financial performance in Q3 -2024.

Google’s strides in AI signal considerable changes in the tech. industry and society at large. The advancements point to the undeniable fact regarding Google, vindicating its tech. leadership in the industry and also sets a precedent for broader industry adoption. The social implications particularly, employment and upskilling require careful consideration while transitioning to AI-agnostic models to drive business and workforce efficiency.
