The Indian Premier League(IPL) governing council announced the IPL player regulations for rules for the IPL 2025 season. There are numerous new announcements for the upcoming 18th season. One of the most talked about changes is reintroducing the right-to-match (RTM) card, which gives the team a second chance to retain their best players. Some other changes include an increase in the franchise purse, the reintroduction of uncapped players and stricter rules for foreign players.
New IPL Retention Rules:
1 – Purse Amount Raised:
BCCI has raised the purse amount requirement for franchises from Rs 100 crores to Rs 120 Crores, a 20 per cent hike from last year. Due to changed rules, Franchises will have to now set aside Rs 18 Crores, 14 Crores and 11 Crores for the first three retentions. In case of an additional retention request for two more players, they will have to pay Rs 18 Crores and 14 Crores respectively.
2 – RTM Rule:
The Right-To-Match(RTM) rule is being introduced by the BCCI for the 2025 edition of the IPL auction, allowing franchises to match the highest bidder for a player, who had represented them in the previous season. This option was lastly introduced in the 2017 mega auction event. However, it was scrapped ahead of the 2022 edition. The franchises that reportedly argued in favour of this rule were – Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders. However, the rule has been slightly modified this year to give the highest bidder one more chance to change the bid for a player before any other team that might be holding the RTM card can exercise it.
3 – Uncapped Player Rule:
Franchises can retain up to 6 players – 5 uncapped and 1 uncapped. The BCCI has introduced a major change for this season by reviving the uncapped player rule. This rule secures the retention of uncapped international players who did not have a BCCI contract over the last few years. In case a franchise decides to retain 6 players, they will have to pay a total of Rs 75 Crores for the capped players and Rs 4 Crores for the uncapped players.
4 – Stricter Rules for Foreign Players
BCCI has made a mandate for foreign players to register for the mega auction if they want to be eligible for the mini-auction next year. This rule was introduced after the most expensive player tag was brought twice in the mini-auction last year.
Final Deadline for IPL Retention Rules Announcement:
The BCCI has asked the franchises to provide their final list of players by 31st October 2024. Any player who makes a debut for Team India before this day will be categorized as a capped player, else the player will be tagged as an uncapped player.
